How to Prep for the Most Flawless Makeup Application

Everyone should have a skin care routine of some sort but even more so if you use makeup or plan on getting your makeup done. Here are a few things you can do to prep for the most flawless application.

1. Exfoliate

Foundation clinging to textured patches or flaky skin is super common when wearing makeup but there is a very simple fix! Exfoliating your skin 2-3 times per week will keep your skin smooth and glowy on the regular and it will give you the best results when it comes time for a makeup application. If you plan on getting your makeup done professionally and do not have an exfoliation routine, doing it at least once the week of your appointment works well enough.

2. Cleanse

Makeup also best adheres to freshly washed skin. Washing your face right before will get rid of any excess oils and impurities that can prevent a smooth application or break makeup down faster. For professional applications,  be sure to cleanse your face before heading to your appointment for the best result.

3. Moisturizer

Using a moisturizer that is compatible with your foundation is one of the keys for a super smooth, long lasting finish. If the two don’t play well together, your foundation will separate almost immediately on the skin, leaving you with a patchy base. For example, sometimes using a water based foundation on top of a moisturizer with silicone ingredients will result in makeup that won’t stick to your skin. If getting your makeup professionally done, it’s best to skip the moisturizer as your makeup artist will likely have a moisturizer and primer that works best with the type of foundation they have. If in doubt, it’s always good to ask!

4. Scrub and Moisturize Your Lips

Scrubbing and exfoliating your lips is key to having smooth a lipstick or gloss application. There are various different methods but my favorites are using a lip scrubbing tool or a sugar scrub. Doing this the day before an appointment and keeping your lips topped off with a balm is essential for the perfect pout. Below are some recommended products if you don’t already have staples!

5. Groom Your Brows

Making sure your brows are as groomed as possible will not only expedite the entire makeup application process but it will give you more of a polished end result. This consists of trimming long hairs or shaping them by tweezing, waxing, threading, etc. When the brows are long, unruly or unshaped, it can be a bit tough to try and force them into a shape that compliments the face. Unless you’re going for the super natural, untamed brow look, having them already groomed prior to a makeup application will 100% help with a flawless result.
